Neutral atoms Review

All atoms are in general are Neutral which means ___Protons = _electrons.To calculate the charge of an atom you use the formula: Protons - electrons = charge (because electrons are always negative) The overall charge of a neutral atom is 0 (zero) Positive charges = negative charges.

5

Multiple Choice

A neutral atom of sodium (Na) has how many protons and electrons. Use Periodic table https://ptable.com/#Properties

1

11 protons, 11 electrons

2

23 electrons, 11 protons

6

Multiple Choice

The protons are always equal to what number on the periodic table?

1

Atomic number

2

symbol

3

Mass number

7

Multiple Choice

A neutral atom has 13 electrons what element is this? why? https://ptable.com/#Properties

1

Magnesium because the protons are 12

2

Carbon because the mass is almost 13

3

Aluminum because the protons are 13

8

Ion Review

Sometimes atoms form Ions which means they either have more Protons or electrons and are not neutral anymore. They can only gain or lose electrons never protons.

9

2 Types of ions

An anion is a ion that has more electrons than Protons which gives it an overall negative charge. (Way to remember aNion has an N for negative in it) A cation is an ion that has more protons  than electrons which gives it a overall positive charge. “They are Pawsitive like a cat” You calculate the charge of an ion: Protons - electrons = charge.

Calculating charges review

  • Protons - electrons = charge

  • Electrons are negative that why in the formula you subtract electrons.

  • Remember you can use a calculator either on google, computer, phone etc..
