MAD (Mean Absolute Deviation)
Lesson 6.10

2
Why is it important to find the MAD of a data set?
Think about test scores, or homework scores... What was your grade? What was the class average?
How far away from the class average was your score? How far away from the class average was everyone else?
3
Remember: To find the MAD:
Calculate the mean of the data set.
Find the distance that each number is from the mean and write the differences. (Subtract the mean and the original number.)
*NOTE: this value needs to be positive because it is the absolute value of the deviation (difference). It does not matter if the values are above or below the mean. ALWAYS subtract the smallest number from the biggest number for MAD.
Calculate the mean of the deviations.
