Vocabulary Building: Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes

Many words are made up of one or more parts. The root of a word is the part that carries the most meaning. Affixes are word parts that change the meaning or function of a word, and they can be added before or after the root.

Open Ended

Give one example of a word that includes a prefix, root, and a suffix.

14

Vocabulary Building: Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes

In your reading, you may encounter many unfamiliar words. Rather than skipping over them, you can use your knowledge of roots and affixes to understand the meanings of these words. Many Greek and Latin roots resemble English words in spelling and meaning. Recognizing similarities between foreign roots and English words will help you understand word meanings.

15

Vocabulary Building: Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes

  • Consider the word indefatigable, which is used in Chapter III of Animal Farm. The word is composed of two Latin prefixes, in– and de–, the Latin root fatigare, and the suffix –able. Look at the meaning of each word part:

16

Vocabulary Building: Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes

  • in = not

  • de– = of, from, away

  • fatigare = wear out

  • able = capable of

17

Vocabulary Building: Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes

Based on these word parts, can you infer the meaning of the word? First, look at the root word, fatigare. What English word does this root resemble? You should recognize the word fatigue, which indicates exhaustion or tiredness. Putting the meaning of the word parts together, you can infer that the word indefatigable means “not capable of being tired out.” Even though indefatigable is a long word, you can understand it by breaking it down into its word parts. Knowing the meanings of common prefixes, roots, and suffixes will help you to be able to decode words as you read.
