Past simple and Past continuous

Les deux temps sont souvent utilisés dans une même phrase, pour parler d'un évènement en interrompant un autre :

Peter was reading when the phone rang.

Ici l'action en cours (was reading) a été interrompue par l'action au past simple (rang).
