Subject and Object Pronouns

2
A subject pronoun performs the action in the sentence. It is the subject of the sentence.
A subject comes before any verbs in a sentence (except in a question).
Subject pronouns are I, you, he, she, it, we, they, and who.
Ex. I make cookies every Sunday.
3
An object pronoun receives the action in a sentence. It is the direct object, indirect object, or object of the preposition in a sentence.
Objects come after any verbs in a sentence.
Object pronouns are me, you, him, her, it, us, them, and whom.
Ex. Georgia handed him the paper.
4
Remember, direct and indirect objects come after transitive verbs, and transitive verbs are ALWAYS action verbs. If the verb in the sentence is a linking verb, it’s likely any pronouns that come after it are subject complements (nouns, pronouns, or adjectives that follow linking verbs) and need to be in subjective case. This may not “sound right,” but it is correct in formal writing. Using objective case pronouns here is acceptable in conversation.
Ex. The actor who won the award was he. (The actor who won the award was him).
Ex. It was I who woke you up. (It was me who woke you up).
5
When dealing with two pronouns at once, don’t mix cases. They must both be in the same case. When in doubt, try removing one of the pronouns from the sentence to see if it makes sense. Change any incorrect pronouns to the case of the one that makes sense.
Ex. Him and I went to the movies.
Him went to the movies. (incorrect)
I went to the movies. (correct)
He and I went to the movies.
6
Select the correct pronoun to complete each sentence.
