You may encounter some problems when colouring the hair, let's learn about some causes and the remedies to these.

Hair is too yellow...

This could be caused because the hair is underdeveloped, so not left on long enough, OR

The peroxide strength was not strong enough, OR

You chose the wrong colour or product, OR

You may not have considered the tones that were already present in the hair

To correct this...

  • Use a violet toner

  • Rebleach if the hair condition is good enough

  • Learn more about peroxide strengths before you colour or bleach hair.

Uneven colour result...

The product may be been poorly mixed, make sure there are no lumps before you use a colour. OR

You applied the colour unevenly, OR

The hair was very porous before application, OR

You selected the incorrect colour for white hair (if applicable), OR

The colour was underdeveloped.

To correct ...

  • Apply a quasi colour if suitable

  • Spot tint/bleach the uneven areas

  • Check MFIs for development times

  • Refer to senior stylist for colour correction service.​

The colour hasn't covered the white hair...

This could be due to resistant hair, OR the hair should have been pre-softened, OR

You chose the wrong colour, OR

You used the wrong peroxide strength.

​Caused by:

Too much product applied

Packets were folded too many times/ too tight

Product was not applied carefully

Too much heat ​

Client should be referred to senior stylist for colour correction.

Spot colour the area ​

  • Pre-soften the hair in future

  • Reapply the product if hair condition allows.

The client has skin staining...

This is caused by poor application techniques, OR

the client has very dry skin around the hairline, OR

you did not apply barrier cream

To correct this...

  • use a stain remover

  • re-emulsify at the basin and try to rinse again

  • remember to use a barrier cream

  • remember the importance of emulsifying colour before rinsing.

Scalp Irritation

This is caused because

the product was too strong, OR

the client had an allergy to the product, OR

there may have been some cuts or abrasions on the scalp

To correct this...

  • remove the product immediately

  • rinse with cool water

  • refer the client to their GP

  • remember to record this on the record card.

Colour is too dark​

This may have happened because you have chosen the wrong product.

OR you mixed with the wrong strength peroxide

OR the hair may be in poor condition

OR the colour was underprocessed​

  • Remove the product immediately

  • Apply a restructurant conditioner to the hair

  • Recommend the client does not have any more chemical proceedures until the condition of the hair improves.

This is caused by the incorrect selection of product,

OR

You have mixed with the wrong strength of peroxide

OR

The hair is in poor condition

OR

You didn't leave the product on long enough to develop​

Recolour using the correct mixture if the condition allows

This is caused by poor application, OR
