"Disaster" etymology

dis (away) + ast (star) = ill-starred, ill-fated

The word disaster is closely tied to the French désastre, from the Old Italian disastro, itself derived from Greek.

The ancient Greeks were fascinated by astronomy and believed the stars influence fate. For them, a disaster was due to an unfavorable alignment of planets and stars.

Stell = star

Stellar is a really good compliment, meaning outstanding and brilliant.

Nicolaus Copernicus

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473 – 1543) was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer who formulated the heliocentric a model of the universe.

The publication of his book was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Scientific Revolution.

Legend has it that he was on his deathbed when given the final printed pages of his book, allowing him to see his life's work. He is said to have looked at his book and then died peacefully.

Heliotropism, a form of tropism (Greek tropos ‘turning’ + -ism), is the motion of plants in response to the direction of the sun.

Sunflowers are heliotropic.
