How Can You Find the Area of a Trapezoid?

A trapezoid is a quadrilateral that has only one pair of opposite sides that are parallel.

Slide image

4

Step One - Divide the Trapezoid into Parts

-Find the length of any missing base or height.
-The base of the 2nd triangle is 2ft because 14ft - 12ft = 2ft

5

Step Two - Find the area of each part

1. Triangle 1 (B = 4, H = 7): 4ft x 7ft divided by 2.  28÷2=1428\div2=14  feet

2. Triangle 2 (B = 2, H = 7): 2ft x 7ft divided by 2.  14÷2=714\div2=7  feet

3. Rectangle (B = 12, H = 7): 12ft x 7ft = 84ft.

Step Three - Add the areas of the triangles and rectangle.

Triangle 1: 14 feet

Triangle 2: 7 feet
Rectangle: 84 feet

14 + 7 + 84 = 105 sq ft
