Ranks & Paygrades

• There are three groups which paygrades are divided into:

• Enlisted [E1 - E9c]

• Warrant Officers [WO1 - CWO5]

• Officers [O1 - O10 (O11/O12)]

• Paygrades can be viewed as a simplified code that allows one to find out an individual's rank

Paygrades/Ranks

• Paygrade clearly denotes the (Enlisted/Officer/WO) GROUP & AUTHORITY of a rank, whereas a rank name does not.

• Paygrade - E4; Rank - Corporal

• Paygrade - E9b; Rank - Command Sergeant Major

• Paygrade - CWO2; Rank - Chief Warrant Officer 2

• Paygrade - O3; Rank - Captain

• Paygrade - O7; Rank - Brigadier General

• Enlisted Soldiers refer to each other by rank, NOT by paygrade.

Enlisted Insginia

• Found on Arm Sleeves

• ALL LOOK PRETTY SIMILAR, UNLIKE OFFICER INSIGNIA

• Diamond/Star/Eagle

Warrant Officer Insginia

• Worn on both Shoulders

• A Straight Vertical Line implies the highest WO rank

• Otherwise, the number of small black squares show the difference in rank insignia/authority

Officer Insignia

• Worn on both shoulders

• All General Ranks (O7-O10/11/12) have a 5 pointed Silver Star

• Spread Eagle for Colonel

• Oak Leafs for Major and Lt. Colonel

• Bars for O1-O3

• REMEMBER: SILVER > GOLD
