Present Simple

We use the present simple to:

  • Talk about habits or things we do regularly. For example: I always get up at 7.00. The children visit their cousins on the weekends.

  • Talk about facts or things that are always true. Example: The bank never opens on Sundays. The Earth goes round the Sun.

- Affirmative - with SHE, HE and IT

  • Most verbs add -S at the end. Example: looks, drives, etc.

  • Verbs that finish in: o, sh, ch, x, ss, add -ES at the end. Examples: GO > GOES, FIX > FIXES, WATCH > WATCHES

  • Verbs that finish in consonant and Y, erase the Y and add -IES. For example: STUDY > STUDIES

REMEMBER

YOU ONLY ADD -S, -ES or -IES in affirmative with SHE, HE or IT

  • She, He or IT > DOESN'T

  • I, You, We, They > DON'T

Questions

  • There are two types of questions

  • YES/ NO questions and WH questions

Yes/ NO questions in present simple

  • DOES + she/he/it + VERB ? --> Does he study English?

  • DO + I/you/we/they + VERB? --> Do they play tennis?

Wh Questions in present simple

  • WH + DO or DOES + subject + VERB?

  • Examples: Where do you study? What does your brother do? Why do you like English?

  • REMEMBER: what, when, where, how, which, who, why
