3 Past Tenses

They describe actions in the past.

We didn’t go to school yesterday.

I was doing my homework from 3 till 5 yesterday.

My father had washed our dog by 7 p.m. yesterday.

What is the difference then?

The difference is hidden in the words:

yesterday – just informs what happened

from 3 till 5 yesterday – tells about actions at a certain period of time 

by 7 p.m. yesterday - tells about the action completed by a certain period of time  

What is the difference then?

the difference is in the way the action(s) took place:

- Simple – names the action

 

    - Continuous – describes the action

 

- Perfect – explains the situation in the past

PAST SIMPLE

S + Ved /2_ф.

We played football yesterday.

They bought a new car last year.

ВЖИВАЄТЬСЯ

коли дія відбулась (і завершилась) в певний момент у минулому:

She came home at 5 o’clock yesterday.

коли дві та більше дій відбулись одна за

одною послідовно без великих інтервалів у часі:

They bought the tickets, took their seats and

the performance began.

PAST  CONTINUOUS

S + was / were + Ving

We were playing football at 5 o’clock yesterday.

I was running in the park when it started raining.

ВЖИВАЄТЬСЯ

коли дія тривала в певний момент у минулому:

She was coming home at 5 o’clock yesterday.

коли дві або більше дій тривали одночасно в минулому:

While she was coming home, she was looking at the windows .

коли дія тривала в минулому, а інша її перервала:

She was coming home when she met her friend.

PAST PERFECT

S +had+ Ved / 3_ф.

We had played football by 5 o’clock yesterday

I ran to the park after it had stopped  raining.

ВЖИВАЄТЬСЯ

коли дія завершилась до певного моменту

у минулому:

She had come home by 5 o’clock yesterday.

коли дія завершилась до початку іншої дії

в минулому:

She had come home before it started raining.

EXAMPLES

She read this book 2 years ago. - Past Simple

She was reading this book when the lights went out. - Past Continuous

She had read this book by the end of the last month. - Past Perfect
