Reported Speech

Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said.

Example:

direct speech: 'I work in a bank,' said Daniel.

reported speech: Daniel said that he worked in a bank.

EXAMPLES

SIMPLE PRESENT - SIMPLE PAST

Direct Speech: Jamila said: "I travel a lot in my job."

Reported Speech: Jamila said that she travelled a lot in her job.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS - PAST CONTINUOUS

Direct Speech: João said: "The baby is sleeping!"

Reported Speech: He told me the baby was sleeping.

EXAMPLES

CAN/CAN'T - COULD/COULDN'T

Direct Speech: Juliana said: “I can go with you”. 

Reported Speech: Juliana said that she could go with me.

WILL/WON'T - WOULD/WOULDN'T

Direct Speech: She said: “I will travel next month”.

Reported Speech: She said she would travel the month after.
