Place Value

3

Learning Intention

  • We are learning about place value.

  • We are going up to the thousands

4

Success Criteria

I can:

  • Use expanded notation to show numbers broken up, all the way to the thousands.

  • Show where each place value name falls and how many digits it has.

  • Explain what each places value is.

  • Identify a place value chart and understand it's meanings.

5

Place Value

This is a place value chart. This specific chart goes up to the millions as you can see. We are starting with the number 119.

If we look at the blue collum we can see that there is 100 sitting there. That is there hundreds place. When you listen to the number 119 you can hear one hundred so there is simple one of the hundreds.

6

Place Value

In the purple collum now looking at the number 119 we can see a 1 in the tens place. Ther e is 1 ten . Now in the pink collum, the ones 119 looking and listening to/at this number you can tell that there is nine in the one place. So you have nine ones. 1 of the hundreds + 1 of the tens + 9 of the ones is 119 which was our starting number! Now it's your turn...

Expanded Notation/Form

  • Showing the full value of each didit it shows as a sum of multiplying (timesing) and addition (adding or just addition by it's matching place value.

  • It shows the given value of each digit.

  • The standard form of one hundred and eighty-two is 182.

  • The expanded form of one hundred and eighty-two in just addition is 100+80+2.

  • Multiplication and addition: 182= 1 x 100 + 8 x 10 + 2x1

11

Say these in expanded form:

  • 815= 8x100 + 1x10 + 5x1 = 815

  • 250= 200 + 50 (+0) = 250

  • 418= 4x100 + 1x10 + 8x1 = 418

  • 302 = 300 + (00) + 2+ 302

  • 709 = 7x100 + 9x1 = 709
