How do we use 'would'?

  • 'Would' is the past tense (verb 2) of 'will'

  • To ask who, what, where, why, when, how questions

  • Like this: When would this lesson end?

  • To make a polite request or offer

  • Like this: Would you kindly pour me a drink?

  • Or this: Would you like some tea?

How do we use 'would'?

  • To talk about hypothetical (imaginary) situations

  • Like this: I would love to have a pet bear someday.

What about 'should'?

  • 'should' is the past tense (Verb 2) of 'shall'

  • We use 'should' to show how something might happen.

  • Like this: The train should arrive in just a few more minutes.

  • We use 'should' to ask questions.

  • Like this: Should we turn left at this intersection?

  • To give a recommendation or an opinion.

  • Like this: I think you should concentrate on your studies more.

  • To show that something must be done.

  • Like this: I should go to school now, otherwise I'll be late.
