God Looks at the Heart - page 165

When Saul was no longer open to the spirit of the Lord, God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king from among the sons of a man called Jesse.

God told Samuel to only look at the heart of each son and not their appearance.

Jesse presented seven of his sons for Samuel but God did not choose any of them so Samuel asked if there was another son.

Jesse sent for his youngest son, David, who was tending sheep, and when he arrived, Samuel heard God say that David was the one to be anointed (chosen) as king.

1 Samuel 17 - The story of David and Goliath

In this chapter of first Samuel, Saul was preparing to fight against the Philistines. A very tall warrior, named Goliath approached the Israelite camp and shouted a challenge to one on one combat but none of the Israelites wanted to do battle against him.

David was sent by his father, Jesse, to take food to his brothers at their camp and heard Goliath's challenge. David decided to accept Goliath's challenge, and took up a staff, sling and 5 stones.

Goliath laughed and taunted David but David used his sling and with 1 stone, Goliath fell. The Philistine army began to flee and the Israelites chased them.

David's Leadership - page 165

Saul and his son died in battle with the Philistines and the tribes of Israel declared David their king.

David wanted to unite the people of Israel so he declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel and brought the Ark of the Covenant to a special tent that he set up there.

Many people came to Jerusalem to worship there because the Ark of the Covenant was there. This helped to unite the people into one nation.

5

David's Sin - page 165

David was a great king and warrior but he sinned by wanting another man's wife. The man's name was Uriah and Uriah's wife was named Bathsheba. David saw Bathsheba and wanted her. He committed a grave sin against her and she was made pregnant. David wanted to force her to become his wife so he ordered Uriah into battle where he was killed. After Bathsheba had mourned for her husband, she became David's wife.

6

David's Sorrow - page 166

God was very angry at David so He sent Nathan the prophet to tell David this story:

There was a rich man and a poor man. The rich man had many sheep but the poor man only had one lamb. The rich man visited the poor man one day and was hungry. He didn't want one of his own sheep so he took the poor man's lamb instead.

Nathan asked David to judge the case. David said that the rich man deserved to die because he stole from the poor man.

7

David's Sorrow - continued

Nathan told David that he was the rich man who had everything but stole Bathsheba from the poor man, Uriah.

David was very sad and wanted to repent of his sins. He fasted and prayed.

Nathan said that God had forgiven him but the child would die as a punishment.

David learned the lesson of God's love and forgiveness. Later in his life, David's son Absalom rebelled against him and David remained loving and forgiving.

God declared David "a man after my own heart and mind" because of his repentance and turning away from the sin of his youth.

David's Love for God - page 167

The book of Psalms are songs of praise for the good things that God has given us. Many of the Psalms are attributed to King David.

The Psalms are an important form of prayer called "praise." In praise, we worship and thank God for giving us good things like food, housing, family, and friends.

The Psalms can be prayed by yourself or with a community such as your church or your family. They remind us how God keeps his promises to us.

17

Psalm 51: 3-4, 12

Have mercy on me, God, in your goodness;

in your abundant compassion blot out my offense.

Wash away all my guilt;

from my sin cleanse me.

A clean heart create for me, God;

renew in me a steadfast spirit.

Many catholics pray this prayer before the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In the footsteps of David - page 167

When he was old, King David anointed his son, Solomon, to rule after him.

David told his son to be strong, and to keep the commandments of the Lord, following God's ways so that Solomon would be successful in all his endeavors.

When David died, he was buried in Jerusalem, also known as the City of David.

19

Solomon, a wise King - page 167

Solomon loved the Lord and followed the advice of his father David to keep the commandments of God.

One night, Solomon heard the voice of God. God told Solomon to ask for a favor. Solomon asked for wisdom because he knew that he was young and needed help to be a good ruler over the people of Israel.

The Lord was pleased with Solomon for this request and said "I give you a heart so wise and understanding that none will ever compare to you."

20

The Gift of Wisdom - page 168

Wisdom is one of the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Through the Sacrament of Confirmation, our relationship to the Holy Spirit is strengthened. We ask God to send us the Holy Spirit to give us these gifts.

According to tradition, Solomon wrote many of the Proverbs in the book of Proverbs and the book of Wisdom. He is credited with writing most of the Wisdom literature in the Old Testament.

21

Work of Wonder - page 168

David had wanted to build a temple to house the Ark of the Covenant but because of his sin against Bathsheba, God did not allow it.

Solomon was allowed to build a temple and it took 7 years to build. When the Temple was dedicated, the priests brought the Ark and placed it in a special room in the Temple called the Holy of Holies.

Solomon blessed the community and said, "May the Lord be with us as he was with our fathers. May this prayer remain always before the Lord that he will defend Israel, and that all peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God. May he draw our hearts to himself, so that we may faithfully serve him."

22

The end of Solomon's reign - page 168

Solomon married many foreign women to make alliances. Some of his wives worshiped pagan gods. Solomon built temples to the pagan gods because of this. Solomon began to worship the pagan gods.

God was angry at this and told Solomon that much of the kingdom of the Israelites would not be ruled by his descendents.

After his death, the kingdom was divided and broken into the tribes of Judah in the south and Israel in the north.
