What is Geography?

Geography is the science of the Earth’s surface, its atmosphere and its features.

Geography informs us about our planet and the world we live in. We learn about different places, the continents and countries as well as the oceans, rivers, deserts or mountains on our planet. 

Continents

There are 7 continents in the world!

Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America.

1. Africa

Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent. It covers 6% of Earth's total surface area and 20% of its land area with 1.3 billion people as of 2018.

Africa has a good known about Safari (wild animals)

-African continent is the world’s oldest populated area.

-Africa is the world’s second largest continent covering about over 30 million square kilometers

-The Sahara is the largest desert in the world and is bigger than the continental USA

-Africa is the world’s second driest continent (after Australia).

2. Antarctica

The Antarctic is a polar region around Earth's South Pole, opposite the Arctic region around the North Pole. Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent

It's a big place

Antarctica is the fifth largest continent.

It's seriously dry

The Dry Valleys of Antarctica are the driest place on Earth, with low humidity and almost no snow or ice cover.

Asia

The world’s largest and most diverse continent. It occupies the eastern four-fifths of the giant Eurasian landmass

Asia is bounded by oceans

 Arctic Ocean to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Indian Ocean to the south, the Red Sea (as well as the inland seas of the Atlantic Ocean—the Mediterranean and the Black) to the southwest, and Europe to the west.

Asia is the largest continent of our planet, both in size and also when we consider the population.

-There are 48 countries in Asia

-More than 4.6 billion people live on the continent.

-Largest Country: Russia 

-Largest City: Tokyo in Japan/Smallest Country: Maldives.

-Biggest Island: Borneo

-Longest River: Yangtze River

-Highest Mountains: Mount Everest.

Australia

Australia is the smallest of the seven continents on Earth.

The first people to discover and settle Australia about 50,000 years ago were the ancestors of the Aboriginal Australians.

Australia is an island country in the Southern hemisphere and belongs to Oceania/Australia. Australia is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Europe

Second smallest of the world’s continents

-There are 50 countries in Europe 

-Most populous city: Istanbul, the biggest city in Turkey

-Biggest Lake: Lake Ladoga near Saint Petersburg in Russia

-Largest waterfalls: The Rhine Falls in Switzerland 

America

-North America

-South America

North America

North America or Northern America is the northern landmass of the Americas. The third largest continent on Earth covers an area of 24.7 million km²

South America

The southern continent of the Americas and situated in the Western Hemisphere. The fourth-largest continent
