Lesson Goals

  • Students will feel at ease and prepared for their unit test.

  • Students will recall the data and statistics learning that has occurred throughout the unit.

3

Standards

  • 6.DS.1: Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for the variability in the answers. Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape

  • 6.DS.2: Select, create, and interpret graphical representations of numerical data, including line plots, histograms, and box plots.

4

Standards

  • 6.DS.3: Formulate statistical questions; collect and organize the data (e.g., using technology); display and interpret the data with graphical representations (e.g., using technology).

  • 6.DS.4: Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context in multiple ways.

5

Important Terms

  • Data: information in number form

  • Frequency: How often something happens

  • Outliers: a piece of data that has a value much less than or much greater than the rest of the data

6

Important Terms

  • Range: The difference between the minimum value and the maximum value in a data set.

  • Minimum: the piece of data that has the least value in a set of data.

  • Maximum: the piece of data that has the most value in a data set.

7

What makes a Statistical Question?

  • Statistical questions are questions that can have more than on answer.

  • What is 2+2? Who is the leading scorer in MLB? What are the measurements of Northside MS,? None of these are statistical questions.

8

Multiple Choice

Which question is statistical?

1

How many visitors came to the museum each month last year?

2

What is the address of the museum?

3

What time does the museum open tomorrow?

9

Multiple Choice

Which question is statistical?

1

Where did you celebrate your last birthday?

2

What is the average age of my friends?

3

What are the ages of my friends' grandparents?

10

Line Plots

  • Displays the frequency of each data value in a data set.

  • Sometimes called a dot plot

  • The total number of xs or dots equals the total number of datat values in the set of data.

Histograms

  • histogram is a graphical display of data using bars of different heights.

  • In a histogram, each bar groups numbers into ranges (or bins)

Stem and Leaf Plot

  • Stem and Leaf Plot is a special table where each data value is split into a "stem" (the first digit or digits) and a "leaf" (usually the last digit).

Box and Whisker Plot

  • box and whisker plot—also called a box plot—displays the five-number summary of a set of data. The five-number summary is the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum. In a box plot, we draw a box from the first quartile to the third quartile.

Box and Whisker Plot

  • The median is the value separating the first half of the data from the second half of the data.

  • To find the median, you either find the middle most number, or take the two closest number to the middle, add them and divide by 2.
