The End of a Village

1 The Kilauea volcano is on the island of Hawaii. Thick, hot lava flows from Kilauea. It has been flowing for more than thirty years.

2 The fiery orange and black lava moves slowly. It is beautiful to look at. But it destroys everything in its path. When the lava cools, it becomes solid black rock.

3 Sometimes the lava heads toward a town. When this happens, the people of the town pack their belongings. They must leave before the lava comes.

3

The End of a Village (contd.)

4 In 1990, Kilauea's lava flowed into Kalapana, a fishing village. The people left their homes. They have not seen their village again.

5 For months, the lava flowed through the village. A pile of lava buried Kalapana's parks, stores, homes, and beaches.

6 The lava also made the island bigger. It flowed out into the sea. When the lava cooled, there was a large mound of black rock where water had been.

4

The End of the Village (contd.)

7 Today, you can visit the area where Kalapana used to be. The people cannot rebuild the village. You can walk on wavy black rocks that look like the surface of the moon.

8 Meanwhile, Kilauea's lava is still flowing. People in Hawaii must watch the lava's path. They hope lava will not come to their neighborhoods. But if it does, they know they must leave.
