3

What did Oswald Avery discover about DNA?

  • Avery and other scientists discovered that the nucleic acid DNA stores and transmits the genetic information from one generation of an organism to the next.

The Double Helix

  • Rosalind Franklin was able to take X-Rays beams on DNA to find a distinct pattern

  • James Watson and Francis Crick took these results and were able to build a structural model of DNA

  • This model of DNA was a Double Helix,

in which two strands were wound

    around each other

What is the shape of DNA?

1

a circle

2

a triangle

a double helix

7

DNA

A DNA is a double helix/double stranded molecule made up of subunits called nucleotides(the building blocks of DNA).

8

DNA

Each nucleotide consist of three components:

A five-carbon sugar molecule which is deoxyribose, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.

There are four nitrogenous bases that compose DNA nucleotides:

Cytosine (C), Guanine (G), Adenine (A), and Thymine (T).

9

DNA

Across the strands of the helix, A always pairs with T, and G with C.

Each base pair is held together by a weak hydrogen bond.

The enzyme that unwinds the DNA to prepare for replication

1

helicase

2

17

Multiple Choice

DNA replication results in two DNA molecules,

1

each one with two original strands

2

one with two new strands and the other with two original strands

3

each one with one new strand and one original strand

18

19

Multiple Choice

The process of DNA replication is called semi conservative because it results in

1

two identical molecules, each with 1 original strand and one new.

2

Two DNA molecules. One original molecule and one with two new strands

3

two exact copies with new strands

20

Multiple Choice

When DNA makes a copy of itself, the new strands are identical or different?

1

2

different
