Cell Transport & Osmosis
How do materials get into & out of cells? What property allows the cell membrane to maintain homeostasis?
2
Lesson Objective
Describe the functions of diffusion, osmosis, and active transport in maintaining a stable cell environment
GUIDING QUESTIONS: The questions that we will answer in this lesson are:
How do materials get into & out of cells?
What property allows the cell membrane to maintain homeostasis?
3
Why are cells so tiny?
Even in very large organisms like this giant whale shark, individual cells are very small.
4
Setting The Stage: Explanation of Cell Size
Cell size is an adaptation that allows cells to efficiently move materials into and out of the cell.
5
This is a close-up image of the cell membrane. It is made up of a phospholipid bi-layer, with many embedded proteins.

Lesson Agenda
PART ONE: First you will learn some important vocabulary terms and key concepts that you will need to know in order to complete the second half of the lesson.
PART TWO: In the second part of this lesson you will apply your knowledge about the vocabulary terms to answer virtual lab questions based on specific scenarios.
You may always go back and review the previous slides or re-watch the videos as needed.
7
Vocabulary Terms & Key Concepts
Take some time to review the vocabulary terms and key concepts on the next few slides before you start the virtual lab activity.

Multiple Choice
Now let's test your knowledge. In an isotonic solution there would be:
a. no net movement of water
b. net movement of water into the cell
c. net movement of water out of the cell
d. bursting of the cell
26
Multiple Choice
When a cell bursts due to osmosis, it is in a solution that is:
a. hypertonic
b. isotonic
c. hypotonic
d. either A or C
27
Will the water move into the cell or out of the cell?
28
Multiple Select
In the image on the previous slide: which way will the water move?
Into the cell
Out of the cell
No net movement will occur
