Extend and reflect

If you measured the height of the crest from the point where the string was attached to the wall, would this help you figure out the depth of the trough?

  • The measured distance between the height of the crest from the point where the string is attached is the same as the depth of the trough from the same point. This is called the amplitude.

5

How would a stretched spring in real life look different from the one pictured in this lesson?

  • In real life a stretched spring would sag in the middle because of gravity.

6

7

Core concepts

Two water waves that have the same amplitude reach the beach. One wave has a shorter wavelength than the other wave. Compare the energy of the waves.

  • The wave that has the shorter wavelength has more energy than the wave with the longer wavelength

Extend and reflect

Which rays of the sun are the most dangerous for your skin?

  • Ultraviolet light rays have more energy, so they would cause more damage to your skin.

  • That is why sun block is rated by how much UV protection it gives.

What is the name of the scientific instrument that measures frequency?

  • An oscilloscope is used to measure the frequency of waves.

11

What are some of the uses of an oscilloscope?

  • An oscilloscope can check the frequency of electronic components to test if they are working correctly or if they need to be replaced.

Evaluate

Which wave properties do you need to know to be able to calculate a wave’s speed?

  • You need to know either the wavelength and frequency or the wavelength and period. Speed equals the wavelength times the frequency or the wavelength divided by the period.

14

What is the relationship between a wave's period and its frequency?

  • As a wave's period gets longer, the frequency gets lower.
