Character Response to Events
Having read the Afterword, I now can see that the author has
incorporated real historical events into the story. For instance, in the story,
Mr. Travis wanted to stay in San Francisco to rebuild his home, which
meant he was going to live in a tent for a while. According to the Afterword,
this is based on the historical fact that survivors of the earthquake lived in
tent cities throughout San Francisco as they rebuilt the city.
