  • The sun is our main source of light and heat on the Earth

  • without light from the sun all living things would not be able to stay alive

  • The amount of heat from the sun that reaches the earth is enough to keep earth warm and support life

Position of the sun

  • the position of sun in the sky changes throughout the day

  • When things are in the Sun, they from dark areas on the ground near them, these area are called shadows

  • A shadow always falls on the opposite side of the sun

Long shadows in the morning

  • The Sun rises and is low in the sky in the morning

  • Things in the sun during the morning form long shadows

Short shadows in the afternoon

  • After the sun rises higher in the sky, the shadows get shorter

  • When the sun is directly above us at noon , things in the sun form short shadows

The cardinal points

  • The cardinal points are the four main directions : North, South, West, East

  • We usually see a compass rose on a map. A compass rose shows the four cardinal points. It is used on a map to locate directions

  • The sun rises in the East and sets in the west

  • Scientist often make use of cardinal points to locate places on the Earth
