Waves Around Us

11
Open Ended
Why is it important for us to learn about waves?
12
The Nature of Waves
A wave is a periodic disturbance that moves away from a source and carries energy with it.
It occurs when repetitive motion called vibration takes place.
13
Open Ended
What are waves that you can think of that carries energy?
14
Waving hand
15
Strumming a guitar
16
Ripples of water
17
A boy tapping his hand on the water.
18
Open Ended
How does a wave transfer/transmit energy from one place to another?
19
Wave Pulse
It refers to a single disturbance that will start a series of disturbances or waves.
20
Types of Waves
21
Transverse Waves
This happens when waves travel in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the wave movement.
The movement of the wave is up and down and moves horizontally.
Examples: Infrared and Ultraviolet rays
22
Longitudinal Waves
This happens when waves travel in a direction parallel to the direction of the wave movement.
Example: Sound waves
23
24
Surface Waves
This happens when the waves travel both as transverse and longitudinal waves.
Surface wave, where the water particles move both horizontally and vertically to the direction of the wave movement.
25
How do waves propagate?
Classification of Waves:
Mechanical Waves
Electromagnetic Waves
26
Mechanical Waves
Waves created require a medium for it to propagate.
Example: SOUND!
27
Electromagnetic Waves
Require no material medium for their passage. Thus, it can pass through empty space.
Example: The sun's ultraviolet rays
X-ray
Radio waves
28
29
PARTS OF A WAVE
30
Crest
Refers to the highest point of the wave.
31
Trough
Refers to the lowest point of the wave.
32
Amplitude
The maximum vertical displacement of the wave from its normal position.
33
Wavelength
The distance between any two successive crests or troughs.
34
Multiple Select
Which of the following are the parts of a wave?
Amplitude
Frequency
Transverse Wave
Crest
Trough
35
SOUND!
Vibrations are regarded as disturbances that will eventually create the sound.
Sound waves created will travel to the ears of the listener and then interpreted by our brains.
Sound needs a medium therefore it cannot travel in a vacuum.
Sound is an example of a longitudinal wave and classified as a Mechanical Wave.
36
Characteristics of Sound: Frequency
Wavelengths of sound can be determined through its frequencies. When there is high frequency, the wavelength of sound is smaller, while a low-frequency sound has a greater wavelength.
37
Frequency
Refers to the rate of vibration of the sound.
In sound, the frequency is also known as PITCH.
This parameter decides whether a sound is perceived as high pitched or low pitched.
38
39
Characteristics of Sound: Speed
Determines how fast or slow sound can travel.
It is dependent on the medium it travels through.
Sound travels fastest in solids and slowest in gas.
Speed of sound in air is also dependent on factors like temperature, humidity, and air pressure.
40
41
42
43
Characteristic of Sound: Amplitude
This is related to the loudness and intensity of sound.
Sound waves transmit different amounts of energy.
This energy is known as the Intensity of Sound.

Group Learning Perfomance Task
Groupings of 7-8 students
Create a video/montage of each group member making a sound.
Tailor your interests through singing, dancing with music, speaking, poetry, creating music or rhythm thru instruments.
Submit the output online thru link in the gc.
