2

What is an adverbs job?

  • An adverb is a describing word.

  • An adverb can only describe a VERB,ADJECTIVE, or ANOTHER ADVERB!

  • Adverbs DO NOT describe nouns (that's the adjective's job.)

3

An Adverb can tell:

  • HOW: The baby cried loudly

  • WHEN: We hope the rain will stop soon.

  • WHERE: He left his hat there.

  • TO WHAT EXTENT: He really wants his bottle.

4

Adverbs can also be used to make comparisons.

  • To compare two items, add er to the adverb

  • For example, let's use the adverb deep. The scuba diver dove deep in the sea.

  • Now let's compare two things. The giant squid dove deeper than the scuba diver could go.

  • We compared how deep the diver and the squid dove.

5

Adverbs can also compare more than two things.

  • For example:

  • The octopus dove the deepest of all of the sea creatures.

  • Here we compared the octopus to ALL sea creatures.

  • to compare more than two, you add est to the end of the adverb.
