  • A complex sentence contains an independent clause and a dependent clause

  • Dependent clauses are started with subordinating conjunctions

  • Dependent clauses can also start with a relative pronoun or a relative adverb

Subordinating Conjunctions

  • Subordinating conjunctions tell where, when, why, or how

  • AAAWWUBBIS: after, although, as, when, while, until, before, because, if, since

  • Can be in the beginning or the middle of a complex sentence

  • If the subordinating conjuction appears at the beginning of the sentence, a comma should follow the end of the dependent clause

  • Example: After she went to the beach, Ms. Banker went home to watch some TV.
