Patterns of Family Structure

Families of all types and sizes tend to behave in similar ways across cultures. These patterns of behavior relate to common family systems. We have THREE patterns or systems of family structure:


1) Inheritance: From which parent do children receive their inheritance? (Patrilineal, Matrilineal, Bilineal)

2) Authority: Who is in control/in charge of the family?

(Patriarchy, Matriarchy, Egalitarian)

3) Residence: Where do families live? Where are they located?

(Patrilocal, Matrilocal, Neolocal)

1) Inheritance.

From which parent do children receive their inheritance?

Children can receive their inheritance from their families in THREE different ways:

A) Patrilineal

B) Matrilineal

C) Bilineal


Each society or culture may apply 1 or more of the three ways listed above.
