What are verbs?

• words that express an action or state of being

• action, linking, helping verbs

Action Verbs

show an action you can SEE

Ex. kick, throw, skate, climb, pounce

BUT ALSO some you cannot see

Ex. think, like, enjoy, wonder

Linking Verbs

• don't show action

• join the subject with a word that describes the subject

• Ex. The quarterback was tired. The linking verb is was. It describes the subject was tired.

Verb phrase

• Has a main verb and at least one helping verb

• Example "may have fallen" may have is the helping verb and fallen is the main verb
