Nail Care

  • Nails should be kept short to limit bacteria growth underneath nails

  • If a pt wants nail polish, this is okay. It's personal preference.

  • Also, it is important for pt's to have properly fitting footwear to reduce foot problems.

  • If you notice this, notify RN to make a referral to get proper footwear for pt.- sometimes insurance can pay or local churches donate

15

Diabetes Nail care

  • DO not soak hands/feet of diabetes pt for extended period of time; it increases risk of infection by breaking down skin

  • Should inspect feet daily for breaks

  • Wear socks and shoes at all time

  • Dry feet completely

  • Note any numbness, tingling or pain

  • Diabetes pt's & pt's w/ circulation problems should not have foot care by PCT. They should see a podiatrist (foot dr.)

  • Notify RN if a pt insists
