• Extremely old binding knot. (at least 4,000 years old!)

• Also called the reef knot.

• Sometimes referred to as the Hercules knot.

• Not very safe

Two half hitch

• Is a binding knot.

• Can be called a Double Half-hitch or a Full hitch.

• Can be difficult to untie.

• Is adjustable and can be tightened under pressure.

Taut-line hitch

• Alternate names are the midshipmans' hitch and the tent-line hitch.

• Is adjustable and cannot be tightened under pressure.

• Used by astronauts in the Second Space Shuttle Mission.
