Coasts

  • Coasts have different features such as caves and cliffs, beaches and mudflats

  • Tides, waves and water currents (flow) shape the land to form these coastal features

  • Some coasts are also changed by the flow of glaciers, which are huge rivers of ice and lava from volcanoes.

  • Humans have also built coastal features features, such as harbors, coastal defenses, and artificial islands

Sea levels rise and fall two times a day along most coastlines.These water water movements are called high and low tides

Waves are big ripples of water caused by the wind. They make the water move up and down and around but they do not movethe seawater from place to place like currents or tides

Cliffs and caves are formed as powerful waves wear away the rocks at sea level

Beaches and dunes

Along the coast where the sea water is calm waves deposit tiny pieces of rocks to form beaches. The wind the sweeps dry sand into coastal dunes
