Electricity Assessment Review

2
How Electricity Works
Everything is made from Atoms. Different materials have different types of atoms.
Surrounding the Nucleus are different layers of orbital shells which act like flight paths for electrons.
3
How Electricity Works
The negative charge of the neutrons is attracted to the positive charge of the Proton.
The outer most orbital shell is known as the Valance shell and in this shell some materials will have loosely bound electrons which can float to other Atoms.
4
Visualizing atoms "passing" electrons to one another as electricity flows.
5
Multiple Choice
Which of the following particles is NOT found in an atom's nucleus?
proton
neutron
electron
6
Multiple Choice
Electrical current is
The movement of electrons from atom to atom which are constantly being replaced
When the electric charges don't move in a wire
A measure of how well a material can conduct electricity
How difficult it is for electrons to move through an object
7
Ohm's Law: V = IR
8
Multiple Choice
What is Resistance?
The flow of electrons
Electric potential difference
A power source
The ability to reduce the flow of electrons
9
Multiple Choice
Voltage divided by Resistance (V / R) equals
Current
Power
Ohms
Watts
10
Multiple Choice
Current times Resistance (I X R) equals
Power
Voltage
Amperage
Ohm
11
Multiple Choice
What is the Voltage of a circuit that has a resistance of 5 Ω and a current of 2 A?
25 V
10 V
2.5 V
0.4 V
12
Chemical Cells
Produce voltage through Chemical Reactions.
Contain two electrodes - different pieces of metal - and electrolyte.
Stop producing voltage when the material(s) run out.
13
Solar Cells
Convert the energy in sunlight to electrical energy.
Contain a material such as silicon that absorbs light energy, knocking electrons loose so they can flow freely and produce a difference in electric potential energy.
14
Multiple Choice
What unit of measurement do we use to measure electrical potential energy in a battery?
Watts
Volts
Amps
Ohms
15
Multiple Choice
A solute whose water solution conducts electricity is called a(n)
nonconductor
electrolyte
nonelectrolyte
aqueous solution
16
Multiple Choice
Two different metals that lose or gain electrons in a battery.
Ex. zinc and copper
wet cells
dry cells
electrolytes
electrodes
17
Multiple Choice
True/False: A cell has three terminals
true
false, a cell has only one terminal
false, a cell has two terminals
false, a cell can have any number of terminals
18
Voltmeters
Measures the voltage drop across a resistor in a circuit.
Have a very high resistance.
Must be connected in parallel to accurately measure the voltage drop.
19
Ammeters
Measures the current traveling through the circuit.
Have a very low resistance.
Must be connected in series to work properly.
20
Multiple Choice
A device used to measure the electric potential energy drop from one point to another.
voltmeter
gauge
ammeter
clock
21
Multiple Choice
A voltmeter must have
Low resistance so that it does affect the current through the main circuit
High resistance so that it does affect the current through the resistor
Low resistance so that it does affect the voltage across the resistor
22
Multiple Choice
An ammeter must have
Low resistance so that it does affect the current through the main circuit
High resistance so that it does affect the current through the main circuit
Low resistance so that it does affect the voltage across the resistor
