What is a proteins

Proteins are made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units called amino acids, which are attached to one another in long chains. it is commonly found in animal products, though is also present in other sources, such as nuts and legumes.

4

Proteins functions

Protein has many roles in your body.

It helps repair and build your body's tissues,

allows metabolic reactions to take place

and coordinates bodily functions.

5

Another way to remember proteins is the acronym MEANS

6

Membranes

Act as receptors of signals or help transport materials across the cell membrane

7

Enzymes

Enzymes are biological molecules (proteins) that act as catalysts and help complex reactions occur everywhere in life. Let’s say you ate a piece of meat. Proteases would go to work and help break down the peptide bonds between the amino acids.

8

Antibodies

a protective protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of a foreign substance, called an antigen. Antibodies recognize and latch onto antigens in order to remove them from the body.

9

Non-steroid hormones

Send chemical signals in the body.

Ex. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar

10

Structure

Some proteins are fibrous and provide cells and tissues with stiffness and rigidity. These proteins include keratin, collagen and elastin, which help form the connective framework of certain structures in your body

Ex. Keratin is a structural protein that is found in your skin, hair and nails.

13

Nucleic acids functions

The functions of nucleic acids have to do with the storage and expression of genetic information. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) encodes the information the cell needs to make proteins. A related type of nucleic acid, called ribonucleic acid (RNA), comes in different molecular forms that participate in protein synthesis.

14

Nucleic acids structures

Nucleic acids which we will cover in more depth later, are composed of a 5 carbon sugar , phosphate back bone and an amino acids

you have differently amino acids to help code for different things.

15

Nucleic acids

Nucleic acids are found in DNA and RNA within the nucleus of the cell
