Number Lines are our Friends!

  • As we go to the right on a horizontal number line, the numbers get bigger.

  • As we go to the left on a horizontal number line, the numbers get smaller.

  • We can use these facts to add and subtract integers on a number line. But first...

When Adding with Integers...

  • If we are adding a positive, we say we are getting "more positive."

  • "More Positive" means we are going towards the positive side, or to the right.

  • If we are adding a negative, we say we are getting "more negative."

  • "More Negative" means we are going towards the negative side, or to the left.

7

This is in reference to the SECOND number.

The first number is just where you start (more on that later).

12

Okay, so how do I add them?

  • Step 1: Draw a number line.

  • Step 2: Start at the first number.

  • Step 3: Determine if you are getting more positive or more negative.

  • Step 4: Move the absolute value of the second number in the proper direction, based on step 3.

  • Step 5: Your answer is where you land.
