Comparing and Ordering Fractions

REMEMBER:

• Fractions can be SIMILAR or DISSIMILAR

• Only SIMILAR FRACTIONS can be compared by comparing its numerator.

• We use the symbols < , > or = in comparing the fractions.

SIMILAR FRACTIONS

are fractions with the same denominator.

COMPARING SIMILAR FRACTIONS

We compare SIMILAR FRACTIONS by comparing their numerator. The bigger numerator means that the fraction is bigger.

EXAMPLES

•  $\frac{4}{5}>\frac{1}{5}$  

• The given fractions are similar.

• the numerators are 4 and 1

• 4 > 1

• that means   $\frac{4}{5}is\ greater\ than\frac{1}{5}$

• The given fractions are similar.

• the numerators are 7 and 8

• 7 < 8 

• that means   $\frac{7}{9}is\ less\ than\ \frac{8}{9}$
