When you are comparing two similar objects, you can avoid repetition by dropping the noun and using an article with an adjective.

How?

¿Cuál prefieres, la sudadera apretada o la floja?

Which hoodie do you prefer: the tight or the loose one?

This also happens in English:

-Do you prefer the red jacket or the blue one?

- The red one.

In this case the noun is dropped because the speakers know what object they refer to.

In Spanish we dropped the noun but we keep the article- la- and the adjective-floja-
