What's the Matter?

In Chapter 12, we will be discussing the properties of matter and the Periodic Table. But First! Lets talk about what really Matters.

Also Don't worry about the plasma.

What is Matter?

  • Matter is in every object around us because everything takes up space and has a mass.

  • All solids, liquids, and gases are phases of matter.

  • The next few slides will show all the examples of matter

For solids with matter think of an ice cube. It was a liquid but freezing the water causes the particles to group up creating ice cube.

But what happens when the water is in warm area?

4

The Particles begin to warm up, causing them to move away.

Water is matter but with Volume, even if its no longer a solid, the water still takes up space. It also has a mass.

If we filled a bucket with water and we try to pick it up, the bucket would weigh more than it was empty.

But what happens to the water if we apply too much heat?

5

When water reaches it's boiling point it creates steam. The steam is actually all the particles of matter, spreading out even more than before.

The steam is the gas property of water.

Examples/Studying Matter

  • What is the study of matter called? Chemistry.

  • Chemists, people who study chemistry, examine different substances to find its properties
