How do find the mean of a histogram

  • Create your data set. Each bar gives you a number in the set. {5, 3, 3, 5}

  • Add the numbers: 5 + 3 + 3 + 5 = 16

  • There are 4 numbers in the set.

  • Divide the sum by 4: 16/4 = 4

  • You could also reorganize the stacks to be equal heights of 4 wands.

How do you find the mean of a dot plot?

  • Create your data set. Each dot represents the number below. There are 2 dots above the one, so there are two 1s in the set.

  • Data Set: {1, 1, 3, 5, 9}

  • Find the sum: 1 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 9 = 19

  • Divide the sum by 5 because ther 5 numbers (dots) in the set: 19/5 = 3.8
