What is a preposition?

a type of word that shows the relationship between a noun and other words in a sentence

Prepositions usually answer the question "Where" or "When"?

Lucy jumped on the bed.

on = preposition

bed = noun

Lucy jumped on the bed.

Where did Lucy jump? On the bed.

On the bed is the prepositional phrase!

After lunch, Isaac took a walk.

after = preposition

lunch = noun

After lunch, Isaac took a walk.

When did Isaac take a walk? After lunch.

After lunch is the prepositional phrase!

There are also some prepositions that don't tell us "where" or "when".

Ms. Karen read a book about aliens.

Noah cheered with his team.
