Comparative adjectives

  • We use comparative adjectives to talk about differences between two things or people.

  • Hulk is stronger than Spiderman.

  • We use than after the adjective and before the second thing or person.

  • Tony Stak is richer than Peter Parker.

Short comparative adjectives

  • With short adjectives we add -er

    old - older

    tall - taller

  • With adjectives that end in e. we add -r.

    close + r - closer

    wide +r - wider

  • With short adjectives ending in a vowel plus a consonant we double the final consonant and add -er.

    big + ger - bigger

    hot + ter - hotter

  • With adjectives ending -y , we drop the y and add -ier.

    happy - happier

    heavy - heavier

As...as

  • We put as before and after the adjective.

    This giraffe is as tall as you.

  • We use as...as to say that two people or things are the same.

  • We use not as...as to say that two people or things are not the same.

    English isn't as difficult as Japanese.

    My hair isn't as long as yours.

    Walking isn't as quick as taking the bus.
