Lord Shaftesbury

• Lord shaftesbury was a wealthy farmer and land owner,he read reports in newspapers about the miserable working conditons for most people

• Beginning in 1833, he was able to get the gorvenment pass laws called The Factory Acts

• Although this was good for factory workers ,the factory owners themselves weren't so pleased with these acts since they had to increase the wages to workers

• One of the most important acts of the law was that women and children were not to work more than 10 hours a day

Dr.Barnado

• Dr. Thomas Barnado came to london to train as a doctor

• He set up a ragged school for some poor children, one of the children known as Jim Jarvis showed him what children like him went through.

• Dr.Barnado was set up various homes and schools for orphans,widows,the disabled and the unemployed

• Dr.Barnado's charity still helps upto today

• Dr.Barnado once saw a child die that he vowed to never turn away anyone in need of shelter or clothing
