A term

A polynomial is made of terms that are added together or just one term.

A number with no variable is a constant term.

If a term has a number it is an algebraic or variable term.

Each algebraic term has a coefficient and an exponent.

3

An algebraic term

The coefficient is the factor in front of the variable. If the factor is one then we usually do not write it.

 4n34n^3  coefficient is 4, exponent is 3

 n8n^8  coefficient is 1, exponent is 8

 7n7n  coefficient is 7, exponent is 1

4

Terms are classified by degrees

A term with a variable raised to an exponent of 3 is called a cubic term. It is degree 3.

A term with a variable raised to an exponent of 2 is called a quadratic term. It is Degree 2

A term with a variable raised to an exponent of 1 or no exponent is called a linear term. It is Degree 1

No variable is a constant term. It is Degree 0

Polynmials do not have negative degrees.

5

Degree of the polynomial

The polynomial is described by the highest degree in the polynomial.
4y34y^3  is a cubic polynomial and degree 3

7y7y  is a linear polynomial and degree 1
12y24y+712y^2-4y+7  is a quadratic polynomial  and degree 2
 y6+7y^6+7  is degree 6

6

Classifying Polynomials by terms

Polynomials can have one term or more.

If it has just one term it is called a monomial.

If it has two terms it is called a binomial.

If it has three terms it is called a trinomial.

And if it has more than three terms it is just called a polynomial.

Standard Form

A polynomial is in standard form when the highest exponents are first. All like terms must be combined.  The exponents should decrease from left to right. The constant term is considered to have an exponent of zero.
