Getting the Idea

  • Fractions are a part of a whole. If you shade the parts, you can show a whole, or 1.

  • For example, a square can be divided into fourths. Each part is  14\frac{1}{4}  , and all four parts is  44\frac{4}{4}  . 

  •  44\frac{4}{4}  is 1 whole.

Example 1

  • Mrs. Clark asked her class to write 8 as a fraction. What should her students write?

  • Strategy: Write the whole number over 1.

  • Write 8 as the numerator.

  • Write 1 as the denominator.

  •  81\frac{8}{1}   is ht same as 8.

  • Mrs. Clark's students should write  81\frac{8}{1}  .

  • Strategy: Any number over itself is equal to 1.

  •  66\frac{6}{6}  is 1.
