Plant Body Systems
Plants only have two body systems: Roots and Shoots
Roots are below ground.
Shoots are above ground.
5
Root system
1. Brings in water and nutrients from the soil
2. Anchors and stabilizes the plant
6
Shoots System
1. Leaves (conduct photosynthesis)
2. Stems (store & transport water & nutrients)
3. Flowers / fruits / cones (reproduction)
7
Vascular Tissues in Plants
Vascular tissues in plants are similar to the circulatory system of animals. They both carry water, nutrients, and wastes throughout the body.
Plants have two types of vascular tissues:
a. Xylem
b. Phloem
8
Xylem
a. Xylem (non-living; transports water)
How to remember xylem transports water?
THINK! Water and XYlem… like your abc’s! WXY(Z)
9
Phloem
b. Phloem (living; transports nutrients / sugar)
How to remember phloem transports nutrients?
THINK!
Nutrients = Food and Phloem…
Food and phloem both start with “F” sound!

Tropism
Tropism is directed growth in response to a stimulus.
One type of tropism is phototropism.
Phototropism: a plant's response to light.
12
13
Tropism
Thigmotropism: A plant’s response to touch
Examples: Vining plants, Venus fly trap, Touch me not (sensitive plant)
14
15
Tropism
Geotropism (a.k.a. gravitropism) = a plant's response to gravity.
Roots go down, shoots go up.
16

Plants: Sexual Reproduction
Stamen: male part of the flower.
It includes:
Anther - produces pollen (male gamete, or sperm)
Filament
20
Plants: Sexual Reproduction
Pistil (Carpel): female part of the flower
It includes:
Stigma
Style
Ovules - female gametes; fertilized by pollen
21
Pollination
Flower petals are often large, brightly colored and fragrant.
This is to attract POLLINATORS!
Pollination: The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma.
Common pollinators:
Hummingbirds, moths, bees, butterflies, bats, etc.

Multiple Choice
After you eat, your glucose levels rise as nutrients enter the bloodstream.
When glucose levels are high, the pancrease releases the hormone insulin, which reduces blood glucose levels back to normal.
Which two body systems are most important in the homeostasis of blood glucose?
Circulatory and reproductive
Immune and nervous
Endocrine and skeletal
Circulatory and endocrine

Multiple Choice
Plants are vascular. What does vascular mean?
They produce their own food through photosynthesis.
They have a nucleus and organelles.
They have vessels to transport materials throughout the organism.
They cannot move freely.
29
Multiple Choice
Plants have two vascular tissues: xylem and phloem. What are the major differences between xylem and phloem?
Xylem can only carry sugar downwards while phloem can only carry sugar upwards.
Xylem carries nutrients throughout the plant and phloem only carries water upwards.
Xylem carries water upwards and phloem carries nutrients throughout the plant.
Xylem is only found in nonvascular plants while phloem is only found in vascular plants.
