On June 27, 1880, Helen Keller was born a

healthy baby girl. Before she turned two, everything changed. Helen got very sick. She went blind and deaf. Helen got better, but she could never see or hear again.

Helen was a difficult child. She could not

communicate. No one knew what she wanted. No one could tell her how to behave. She yelled, cried, and threw tantrums. When Helen was seven, a special teacher came into her life. Anne Sullivan believed Helen could communicate.

Anne taught Helen how to spell words using her fingers. Helen could not see Anne’s fingers, but she could feel them. Soon, Helen was able to communicate. She learned many things. With Anne’s help, Helen even went to college.

Anne also helped Helen write her life story. She went on to be a famous speaker. She worked for social causes, like women’s right to vote. Helen taught the world that people can overcome difficulties.
