Parallel Structure Definition

  • Parallel structure (also called parallelism) is the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within a sentence.

  • By making each compared item or idea in your sentence follow the same grammatical pattern, you create a parallel construction.

  • For example, using the same preposition, pronouns, verbs within the sentence.

9

Parallel Structure Definition

  • Parallelism is considered a great persuasive tool.

  • Its repetitive quality makes the sentence or sentences symmetrical and therefore very memorable for the readers.

  • Parallelism makes the idea easier for readers to process because they sense a pattern and know what to expect.

  • It uses the same preposition, pronouns, verbs within the sentence.

10

How do we check for parallel structure?

You just need to make sure that every part of the sentence has the same kind of structure.

11

Example 1

  • Mike’s favorite activities are reading, writing, and playing the tuba.

  • In this sample sentence, we see that Mike’s favorite activities all match one another:

  • reading, writing, and playing are all the same kind of word, verbs with an –ing ending.

12

Example 2

  • Mike’s favorite activities are to read, to write, and to play the tuba.

  • This time, the sentence is parallel because the activities all match, to + a verb.

13

Example 3

  • Benjamin likes to hunt, to swim and to jump.

  • Benjamin likes to hunt, to swim and to jump.

14

Example 4

  • The following activities can be done at the mall: buying groceries, eating lunch and paying bills.

  • The following activities can be done at the mall: buying groceries, eating lunch and paying bills.

15

Example 5
