Indirect questions:

  • the question changes into a statement

  • it is NOT a question anymore so you do not use question word order or auxiliary verbs.

Reported questions - the introductory sentence is in the past tense

  • there is a backshift - tense change

  • the tense changes are the same as the rules for reported speech

  • When did you arrive? - He wanted to know WHEN I had arrived.

  • How old is she? - He enquired HOW old she was.

  • we use IF or WHETHER:

  • Do you live near here? He asked me if I lived near.

  • Have you ever seen a ghost. She wanted to know whether I had seen a ghost.
