"Mum says that we should not swim in that deep pool!" protested Jim.

"Oh, don't be such a baby," said Ray with a sneer. On this hot June afternoon, the cool waters seemed so irresistible. The boys were very much tempted to jump in for a quick swim.

"Come on, Julian!" shouted Ray. "Let's compete!"

Despite Jim's constant protests, Ray and Julian dived into the pool happily. Shaking his head in disapproval, Jim walked to the nearby food corner to grab a bite. Like a fish, Ray swam ahead with his powerful strokes. Julian tried to catch up but he knew he could never win Ray. He had just begun his swimming lessons last week. Suddenly, Julian felt a pull in his right leg muscle.

"Help!" cried Julian. "It hurts!"

Ray was too far away to hear his cry for help. Hearing a familiar cry, Jim turned around and was startled to see his brother struggling in the water.

"Oh, dear! What should I do?" exclaimed the frightened Jim.

Fortunately, there was a lifeguard on duty who heard the cries for help. Without hesitation, he jumped into the pool and pulled Julian out. Julian was unconscious and the lifeguard applied first aid on him. Julian soon regained consciousness. Heaving a sigh of relief, Jim and Ray thanked the lifeguard for saving Julian.

The three brothers went home and Jim reported the matter to their mother. Their mother reprimanded Ray and Julian severely and the boys promised not to do it again. Jim was glad that he was spared the scolding.
