* We use although to contrast ideas.

- It matches two clauses.

- It can be at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle of a sentence.


Ex: I'll be there, although I may be late. Although it rained, everyone had a good time.

=> I'll be there, although I may be late. Everyone had a good time although it rained,.

Use in spite of or despite to express a contrast.




  • SITUATION: they didn't study BUT they passed

  • 1- NOUN= In spite of/ Despite their lack of study, they passed

  • 2- ING FORM= In spite of/ Despite not studying, they passed (ING)

  • 3- THE FACT THAT= In spite of/ Despite the fact that they didn't study, they passed (the fact that)


  • NEVER= In spite of/Despite they didn't study, they passed

  • "However' indicates that the relationship between the two independent clauses is one of contrast or opposition. It starts a sentence that shows contrast with the previous sentence. It can also be used at the end of a sentence.


  • We didn't want to go to the party. However, we decided to go.

  • We didn't want to go to the party. We, however, decided to go.

  • We didn't want to go to the party. We decided to go, however.
