Reading Remediation Pt. 1

Making Inferences and Drawing Conclusions

Slide image

2

What does it mean to make an inference?

Writers often tell you more than they say directly. They give you hints or clues that help you "read between the lines." Using these clues to reach a conclusion is called making an inference.

3

What does it mean to draw a conclusion?

You must use your judgment that you form after considering all the evidence from your clues to draw (or come up with) your conclusion.

So lets dive right into it...

Multiple Choice

Ellen felt the warm sunlight hit her face. She rolled over in bed, feeling unusually well-rested. But she knew it was a weekday. When she blinked her eyes and saw “9:00 am” on the clock, she shouted, “Oh nooooooo!” So she jumped out of bed, dressed as fast as she could, brushed her teeth in a flash and grabbed her backpack on the way out of the house.

What can you infer from the passage?

1

Ellen is going to the store to buy toothpaste.

2

Ellen is at the beach.

3

Ellen had trouble sleeping last night.

4

Ellen slept longer than usual and is late.

Multiple Choice

The cat padded into the room. She looked so carefree, ignoring our loud conversation as she settled into the fireplace, purring happily. She was so relaxed that we all stopped talking to watch her. Finally, Nora shook her head, and the spell was broken. “What were we fighting about again?” she asked, and the argument resumed.

Which detail from the passage helps you infer the meaning of the word carefree?

1

“‘What were we fighting about again?’ she asked…”

2

“Finally, Nora shook her head, and the spell was broken.”

3

"She was so relaxed that we all stopped talking to watch her.”

4

Multiple Choice

Julio looked down, regarding his shadow, which was long under the high noon sun. Squinting, he wondered where everyone was. He looked around but saw only a group of prickly cacti standing at attention. His mind began to race. Sweat trickled in small streams down his neck. Was the temperature rising? How much hotter could it possibly get? “Water,” thought Julio. “I’ll try to find some water.” Clearing his throat, he began to walk east, clouds of dust swirling around his feet.

Which detail from the passage provides the best evidence that the story takes place in a desert?

1

“Squinting, he wondered where everyone was.”

2

“Was the temperature rising? How much hotter could it possibly get?”

3

“His mind began to race.”

4

“Julio looked down…”

Charlotte was pet sitting her uncle’s pet boa constrictor. When she went to check on him the next morning, he was missing. There also seemed to be fewer hamsters in the next cage.

What is the most likely conclusion? What happened to the hamsters?
